I thought spending Thanksgiving away from family was going to be hard. As Thanksgiving approached last year, five months after moving to California, I flirted with the idea of buying the plane ticket and going home for Thanksgiving.
But soon enough word was going around. "What's going on for Thanksgiving?" Meaning — who's hosting the day of feasting.
And I soon came to realize that most of my new friends didn't go home for Thanksgiving, but saved the time for Christmas. And as previous Turkey days, friends got together and feasted — buffet style.
This was going to be fun. And it was. The rommies and I hosted Thanksgiving at our place, busily decorating the night before with Turkey-like decorations. Shawn and Greg prepared the Turkey. I played sou chef again, assisting with the Banana Cream Pie, among other things. My contribution was Green Bean Casserole. Shawn brought home tables and table clothes home from work. Fawn and I went back to our youth and pulled out the construction paper — making turkeys from the outline of our hands.

Did I mention that everyone had to show up in costume? Pilgrims and Indians crammed into our kitchen and home, gathering up scoops of various dishes. After our belly's were full, we played one of our favorite games — Catchphrase. Soon the doors and windows had to be closed so we wouldn't scare our neighbors who are mostly old and were probably napping in their recliners after their feast.

This Thanksgiving will be no different. But instead of playing host, I'll be heading over to 4878 Cape May in Ocean Beach where some friends have offered (quoting shawn here....) "their tropical, garden-like courtyard." It looks like we'll be having a bigger crowd than last year, about 17-20 people! And because Don already called the Green Bean Casserole (grrrrr), I'm making Nilla Wafer Pudding Dessert and Hashbrown Casserole. For your enjoyment, here's a list of the assortment of foods that will be gathered at our Thanksgiving table:
Turkey
Fried chicken
Spaetzle w/ gravy
Butternut squash
Wild rice pilaf
Salad
Cranberry and pineapple salad
Green bean casserole
Devilish eggs
Stuffed sweet potatoes w/ pecan and marshmellow streusel
Mashed potatoes w/ gravy

Zach's famous green chile mashed potatoes
