Yes We Can

One, moment in time, America was changed. For the better.
No matter our differences. No matter our beliefs. We need to come together and continue to move forward.

Before I voted yesterday, I read a story in the Los Angeles Times that really made me think "Wow." At 114, a daughter of former slaves cast her vote for Barack Obama. She's the third oldest person in the WORLD. When Gertrude Baines was born, Grover Cleveland was president and the U.S. flag had 44 stars. She grew up in Georgia during a time when black people were prevented from voting, discriminated against and subject to violent racism. IN HER LIFETIME, she has seen WOMEN gain the RIGHT TO VOTE, and drastic changes to federal voting laws and the Constitution. Her walls are covered with birthday cards from presidents and officials from past years. Yes, she even has a framed photo of President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. (Though according to the article, she says that they made her put it up. hahahahaha....)

Anyways, my point is this. In all her years she has seen and taken part in each of these historical events. I can only imagine how things will change, etc., in my years to come. It's exciting. And I'm savoring every historical moment.

It's why I ask my grandparents and parents what they thought, what they were doing at specific moments in our history. I WISH, as I continue to do, they would have wrote down their exact feelings at that time. Because sadly, things are forgotten. I don't want to forget how I felt, what I saw, what I did or who I talked to on September 11, 2001. But not only huge historical moments like that one, but what it was like when my family bought our first computer, when I got my first cell phone and so on. People are going to ask me. And, I will go into my hope chest and pull out journals, letters, pictures, etc.

So let's move forward. Yes, some may be disgruntled and think the world is going to come to an end. Why? I have no idea. I'll admit that if McCain/Palin were elected I would have been discouraged, but I'd never say hateful things and think or say that our country was a disgrace. (Well....Palin...eh.)

So cheers to our next President. I'm BELIEVING in the change. I have FAITH in the change.

My daughter the Journalist. Every day I read your blog and am truly amazed by your words. They are inspiring! You said it all in this one. As we look back on years past remembering gets harder and harder and the pictures in our minds begin to fade. News in print may someday go away but we will always need paper to put away in our hope chest, our memory chest, those places we can go back to to pull out the memories. I had a diary when I was a teenager and one day my brother and his friend got a hold of it. Yes, my most private thoughts were on paper and exposed, those memories are now gone and had discouraged me from putting them on paper again. So kudos to those who do and find the most secretive of places to hide them. Keep sharing your thoughts and keeping our memories alive.
