Adapting to change and new opportunities

You know when you are really full and you just can't get comfortable? Well I did that to myself today during lunch. I dun-lap over my jeans and can't wait to get home and put on some comfy clothes.

I almost have the new Lady Antebellum CD songs memorized. I have many jam sessions in the car — to and from work.

Just now, I got a call from my college to get updates on my address, etc. When verifying my employment, the girl on the other end asked me, "How do you like that?!" I was a little caught off guard by the excitement in her voice, so I just said "I like it a lot." After realizing that she was a student who aspired to be a writer, I got so excited... and then felt old. But more excited. Hahaha! She said her heart is in writing, but she was talking to her dad and her dad said she should look into another area due to that there aren't many jobs in journalism these days. You know what I told her? FOLLOW YOUR HEART. I told her what I wanted my old publisher to tell me when I addressed him with my concerns.

1.  Take what you can get. You have to just get your foot in the door.
2. Don't expect to get a job at a daily newspaper. A weekly newspaper job will actually give you more experience — in writing, designing and photography — especially when you are just getting started.
3. Be willing to move. Be adaptable to change.

I probably talked more than needed, but I knew what she was feeling and thinking.

And I'm thinking they need some new fresh faces teaching college journalism. Where's the real world, inspiring stories?! We need that! I needed that. I did have some good professors though, and an awesome internship. And, I asked questions.

But I'll never forget my newswriting professor (teacher actually). He was a long time reporter for the local daily newspaper. His "experience" got him the job. He was not very inspiring and should have never been allowed to teach. Just because you've been doing something for so many years, doesn't mean you have the heart to teach it. You gotta express the passion. He, frankly, was a jerk. You know what I'd say to him now — SUCK IT! And I couldn't even tell you his name. That's how uninspiring he was.

This is Michelle, signing out.
